Introduction
This is the highest point on Earth: Mount Everest, Chomolungma, Sagarmatha, the Mother Goddess of the Universe, God’s forehead. Hundreds of books have been written and countless films have been made about it. Man has always tried to understand the greatness of Mount Everest. This is also our dream, we will go and meet this sacred mountain and immerse ourselves in the myth that surrounds it. We will follow the trails of the Sherpas through their homeland, the Khumbu Valley. Our trekking will take us inside the Sagarmatha National Park, home to the highest mountains in the world. We will take the classic route crossing the sherpas villages. We will learn about their culture and traditions at Namche Bazaar, and from Khumjung, admire the view of Ama Dablam, which might well be the most beautiful mountain in the world. From Tengpoche we have a view of the other ice giants of the Khumbu region. The road climbs over the Valley of Pheriche taking us to the Khumbu Glacier and further, it will take us through the Lobuche Mountains to get to the Base Camp of Mount Everest. We will climb a little higher from here: we will ascend to the summit of the Kala Patthar, and enjoy the unique view of the pyramid shape of Everest from the “Black Rock Mountain”, as if it were within reach. The ice world of the Khumbu Glacier spreads out below us, and the angular tip of Nuptse with its 7.860 meters, shines in the sun. Watching breathless, we admire the highest mountains in the world. But our trip promises much more than an experience with nature and mountains. Nepal, the ancient kingdom in the heart of the Himalayas, is without a doubt one of the most fascinating tourist destinations in the world. This Hindu and Buddhist country offers great appeal to those interested in culture. The Nepalese, a mosaic of 70 different human groups with more than 50 languages, are well known for their hospitality, and make every trip to Nepal an unforgettable experience. At Kathmandu, the capital city of the country, we will experience a great cultural and religious diversity. We will be surprised by the many Buddhist and Hindu sites, as well as by the artistically decorated temples. This tour program is the classic of our travel category “World Adventures”. SPONDYLUS invites you to join us on an incomparable and fantastic cultural journey, which also includes hikes to Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. Namaste and welcome to Nepal!

Accommodation in Kathmandu: Hotel 4-5*
Meals: -
DAY 4: KATHMANDU / CITY TOUR
After our first night in Nepal obviously we want to get to know Kathmandu, therefore we look forward to today’s program. We let ourselves be carried away by one of the most mysterious and diverse cities in the world, where culture and religion are closely linked, and a colourful mix of people of various Nepalese ethnic groups make up the urban landscape. The vibrant life in Kathmandu will surprise us. First, we will pay a visit to the Swayambhunath religious centre. It is a very important Newarian Buddhist sanctuary that sits atop a hill and has a view over the valley of Kathmandu. 365 pilgrimage steps lead from the foot of the “Temple of the Monkeys” to a gold- plated stupa. The legendary Kumari Palace is located at the Durbar Square, and is the home to a true child goddess. If we are lucky, we might see her appear in one of the windows. The Boudhanath stupa is the largest and most important Buddhist sanctuary outside of Tibet. Respecting the tradition, we will walk around the stupa in a clockwise direction, and we will see the monks with their prayer wheels in their hands. We will continue to the district of the Pashupatinath temples, which is located at the Bagmati River. This is the most sacred place for the Hindus in Nepal. Dedicated to the Shiva God, this temple attracts thousands of pilgrims each year. Here we will visit the Hindu crematorium. It is a great honour for every Hindu to be cremated in this place at the time of death. With all due respect for their religion, we will immerse ourselves in a world that is very strange to us. Many districts of the metropolis have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Unfortunately after the terrible 2015 earthquake, some of the religious sites were destroyed but, contrary to what the press reported, most of the historical buildings are still standing. After this city tour, we will go back to the hotel in the afternoon.
Accommodation: Hotel 4-5*
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 5: KATHMANDU – LUKLA (2850 M) – PHAKDING (2650 M)
Our adventure trip to the foot of Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth, starts now! We will cover the first stage of the journey in a propeller plane. Shortly after the start, we will see in the distance some of the ice armored giants of the Himalayas. Our team will be waiting for us at the airport in Lukla. This is the moment to put the mountain boots on, and our back packs on our shoulders. From here you can only continue by foot, there are neither roads nor motor vehicles. Soon we will see heavily loaded yaks. These strong, hairy and sometimes stubborn animals, have the right of way. In the Khumbu Region, everything is transported either by yaks, mules or people. Porters carry almost everything on their backs, from food to household items, and building materials. After leaving the village behind, we will descend from a hill to the Kumsung River (2550 m). From here we will walk upriver on the eastern shore of the Dudh Kosi, the Milk River, to get to the village of Phakding. We reached our goal of the day! After this we will go to our accommodation, a simple and cosy guest house where we will spend the night in the heart of the Himalayas.
Duration of the hike: 3-4 hours - Ascent: 250 m - Descent: 120 m
Accommodation: Guest House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 6: PHAKDING – NAMCHE BAZAAR (3440 M)
Today will be our first challenge in terms of physical conditions. We will have to walk 9 km and achieve an altitude gain of 800 metres. The first part of the trek will take us along the Dudh Kosi as the day before. We will have to cross swaying hanging bridges. Have lunch at the small village of Jorsale. At the end of town, we will find the entrance control to the Sagarmatha National Park. Sagarmatha is the Nepalese name for Mount Everest and it means "God’s forehead". After completing the formalities to enter the national park, we will continue upriver to the confluence of the Nagpo & Imja Rivers, here they form the Dudh Kosi River. At this point the impressive crossing of the Hillary hanging bridge, built over the Imja Valley, is awaiting for us. It extends for almost 100 meters above the river. The remarkable “steep ramp” follows immediately. We will ascend 600 meters, and finally arrive at Namche Bazaar. It is important to maintain a slow and steady walking pace so as to overcome the large altitude difference. Approximately 7 hours after departing from Phakding, Namche Bazar, the largest city of the Khumbu, spreads like a huge amphitheatre in front of us. We did it! One of the most exhausting daily stages of our trek is now over. Tired but happy, we will rest in our accommodation before dinner.
Duration of the hike: 6-7 hours - Ascent: 850 m - Descent: 30 m
Accommodation: Guest House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 7: NAMCHE BAZAAR (3440 M) / RESTING DAY
After the efforts of the previous day, today we will take it easy. A leisure day also has a positive effect on adapting our bodies to the altitude. Namche Bazar is the administrative center of the Khumbu region. It is the cradle of the Sherpa culture in Nepal, and at the same time, it is the entrance gate to the high Himalayas. The infrastructure is well developed for the local conditions. There is a bank, a post office and a clinic. In the season, nature and trekking enthusiasts from all over the world crowd the narrow streets. The expedition groups stop here for at least one day on their way to Mount Everest or other mountains. Many coffee shops, bars and souvenir shops invite you to visit them. To improve our acclimatization, in the afternoon we will hike to the landing strip in Syampoche. It is located on a hill over Namche Bazaar with a fantastic view of the mighty peaks of Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam and other mountain giants.
Accommodation: Guest House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 8: NAMCHE BAZAAR (3440 M) – KHUMJUNG (3790 M)
After the leisure day in Namche Bazaar, today we will continue our trip. We will leave around 9:00 a.m., after enjoying a good breakfast. We take the road that we already know to Syampoche. El Ama Dablam, for many the most beautiful mountain in the world, now shows us the way. A bit later, the village of Khumjung extends below us. This village is located near the neighbouring town of Khunde in a magnificent valley under the sacred Khumbu Zul Lha (5761 m), the patron God of the Khumbu. This mountain cannot be climbed due to its cultural and religious importance for the Sherpas. With its two-story houses, and the fields separated by stone walls, Khumjung is a typical Sherpa village. It is more than 500 years old, which makes it one of the oldest Sherpa settlements. Gompa, an ancient monastery of the area, is very interesting. For a little monetary tip, it is possible to see the only "real" Yeti scalp that exists in the prayer room.
Duration of the hike: 3-4 hours - Ascent: 450 m - Descent: 100 m
Accommodation: Guest House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 9: KHUMJUNG (3790 M) – PHORTSE (3840 M)
After saying good bye to our kind hosts, we continue the trail. In the beginning it is pretty regular, then starts to descend. Upon reaching the Gokyo Valley, the route over times becomes more difficult. It goes uphill through a beautiful rhododendron forest until we reach our destination, Phortse. The town is located on a small plateau and became well known among other things, because some of the most famous Mount Everest Sherpas were born here. After arriving at our accommodation, we will have lunch. In the afternoon, we will go for walk to explore the town and the beautiful surroundings.
Duration of the hike: 3-4 hours - Ascent: 350 m - Descent: 300 m
Accommodation: Guest House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 10: PHORTSE (3840 M) – PANGBOCHE (3980 M)
In the morning, we will give as always our main luggage to the porters, and will only carry our light back packs. Soon they will pass us by at a really quick pace, carrying the expedition bags on their backs. Our activity today will start like the previous one, by climbing a steep slope. We will have to climb 200 meters right after starting the hike. After approximately one hour, we will look back and see a great view of Phortse. We will continue along narrow trails, walking incessantly on arduous ascents and then down steep slopes. But soon we will be generously rewarded for our efforts. Ama Dablam will now be in front of us, and in the background we will see Nuptse, Everest & Lhotse. What a view! After about 5 hours we will arrive at Pangboche, a town surrounded by an old juniper forest where we’ll find a monastery more than 350 years old. Again, the afternoon invites us to go on a wonderful walk. We can explore the shores of the Imja Drangka River, or the grasslands with countless yaks above town. The ancient Buddhist monastery is also worth a visit.
Duration of the hike: 4-5 hours - Ascent: 570 m - Descent: 430 m
Accommodation: Guest House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 11: PANGBOCHE (3980 M) – PHERICHE (4420 M)
After being the day before a few steps away from the 4000 meter mark, today we will pass it. Once again we will adopt a slow pace, climbing step by step on a good road. Again, the landscape will take our breath away. Ama Dablam is now within reach. Over and over again we will stop and marvel at what many consider the most beautiful mountain in the world. It is also known as the "Matterhorn of Nepal". We will take a long break on a hill to drink nice hot tea. The last bit of the trail goes downhill and, after crossing a bridge, we will be near Pheriche. The villagers and the children greet us at the entrance of the village with a warm "Namaste". Time for a good rest in the room at our accommodation, and we will drink a lot of liquid. This is good for us, and it is a requirement for a proper acclimatization.
Duration of the hike: Approx. 5 hours - Ascent: 690 m - Descent: 150 m
Accommodation: Guest House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 12: PHERICHE (4420 M) – LOBUCHE (4940 M)
Today will be a tough day. That is why having a good breakfast is really important. Due to the altitude it will be very cold when we leave the guest house, but soon the sun will warm us up when it appears in the surrounding mountains. After passing herds of yaks, we will soon enter a valley where after a while we will have to cross the torrent that carries the melted water of the Khumbu Glacier. Once we have crossed the stream we will arrive at Dughla (4620 m), where we will take a break, have lunch and something to drink. After lunch the ascent that we have to do will be exhausting, our endurance will now be tested. Approximately 2 hours after departing from Dughla, we will arrive at a mystical place, the so called “Everest Memorial”. Lots of stone shrines remind one of the tragedies that have occurred on Mount Everest, and they bear the names of countless mountaineers that have lost their lives, both Nepalese and people from all over the world. After a moment of prayers, the trail continues to the valley and soon we will find the moraines of the Khumbu Glacier. From here we are not far from Lobuche, which is located at about 5000 m.a.s.l. The town grew up from an old mountain grassland grazing area. Over the last years the settlement has grown notoriously due to the arrival of mountain and nature lovers. It is located in a small depression between the mountain of the same name and the huge lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier.
Duration of the hike: 5-6 hours - Ascent: 540 m - Descent: 20 m
Accommodation: Guest House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 13: LOBUCHE (4940 M) – GORAK SHEP (5210 M)
The tension now increases more and more, because we know that today we will be taking a decisive step on the way to the base camp of the highest mountain on our planet. We are now on our way to Gorak Shep, the last settlement before Mount Everest. The path leads us along high ground, and soon we will climb up the mighty lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. We are now in a world of rocks & ice. We go up & down this strange and fascinating glacial landscape. After approx. 4 hours hiking we will see Gorak Shep, with the view of the roof of the world and a huge number of fantastic mountains like Mount Everest (8848 m), Lhotse (8516 m), Nuptse (7861 m), Pumori (7161 m) and a lot more. At about 5210 m.a.s.l., the small settlement of Gorak Shep, with a few guest houses is located between the dry bed of a lake and the Khumbu Glacier. The fact that the helicopters are flying at low elevation above the village, indicates our proximity to the long-awaited base camp that we will reach the next day.
Duration of the hike: Approx. 4 hours - Ascent: 370 m - Descent: 100 m
Accommodation: Guest House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 14: GORAK SHEP (5200 M) – MT. EVEREST BASE CAMP (5350 M) – GORAK SHEP (5200 M)
We start our hike to the Base Camp of Mount Everest! We will need about 3 hours to do this. The trail does not present major difficulties, so we will surely achieve our goal without problems. Base Camp is the starting point to climb the southern route of the mountain, the same that Edmund Hillary & Tenzing Norgay took when they became the first people to reach the highest point on earth on May 29th, 1953. Here we can literally feel the environment of the great expeditions. This is the beginning of a big number of stories, legends, successes & tragedies. Many international expedition groups from all over the world meet here, right next to the famous ice waterfall of the Khumbu. Up to 2.000 people, mountaineers, mountain guides, porters, cooks, assistants, doctors, etc., stay here permanently all through the climbing season. We will take our time to walk around the area of the different camping sites. This will give us a very intimate & authentic impression of the atmosphere here, at the starting point of the ascent of the roof of the world. Impressed and happy to have achieved our great goal, we return back to Gorak Shep in the afternoon.
Duration of the hike (round-trip): 5-6 hours - Ascent: 150 m - Descent: 150 m
Accommodation: Guest House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 15: GORAK SHEP (5200 M) – KALA PATTHAR (5675 M) – PHERICHE (4420 M)
Today we will wake up early, because a long and eventful day awaits us along with the ascent of Kala Patthar, another unique highlight. The mountain rises between Gorak Shep and the fantastic pyramid shape of Pumori (7161 m). Due to the early morning start at this altitude, it will be cold, it is important to take warm clothes with us. With the help of our trekking poles, we will slowly climb up to our destination, the summit of the Kala Patthar, where we will arrive after approx. 3 hours. We turn around and hold our breath, Mount Everest is in front of us and the top seems to be within reach. We take our photo from the summit, between a sea of Tibetan prayer flags. This will always remind us of this unique moment. After descending back to Gorak Shep, we will have lunch and rest. Then, we will walk back to Pheriche where we will spend the night like we did on our way up.
Ascent of Kala Patthar (up & down): 5-6 hours - Ascent: 475 m - Descent: 475 m
Trekking time to Periche: Approx. 4-5 hours - Ascent: 120 m - Descent: 910 m
Accommodation: Guest House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 16: PHERICHE (4420 M) - TENGBOCHE (3860 M)
Our journey is not over yet, an incomparable beautiful mountain landscape and unforgettable experiences await us today. On our way back to Namche Bazaar, we will choose the route on the other side of the valley descending to the river. The trail goes downhill so we descend fast. The dream view of the Ama Dablam and the surrounding mountains, will make us stop once and again. “The trail is our goal” is the motto for today. Shortly before Tengboche we will cross a beautiful rhododendron forest, formed by centennial gnarly trees and, depending on the season, can be full of brightly coloured flowers. We will enjoy the afternoon in the garden of our cosy accommodation, or we can walk to an old convent that is close by.
Duration of the hike: Approx. 6 hours - Ascent: 150 m - Descent: 720 m
Accommodation: Guest House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 17: TENGBOCHE (3860 M) – NAMCHE BAZAAR (3440 M)
Tengboche is located at the foot of the northern slope of the imposing Thamserku, which with its 6623 meters and its glacial summit, dominates the landscape. Here we will find a Buddhist Monastery, the most important cultural and religious center of the whole Khumbu. It was built in 1923, and was severely damaged by a devastating fire in 1989 and afterwards was rebuilt. The monastery has the largest temple of the whole region. At the end of October and beginning of November, the Mani Rimbu Dance Festival takes place here, and it is of great cultural importance. Before starting our trekking, we will visit the monastery. If we are a little bit lucky, we will be able to participate in a Buddhist mass, an unforgettable experience. Then we will continue with the hike. Today we will also walk through beautiful rhododendron forests and go downhill, only to go uphill again. It is physically demanding. This is how we will finally get to Namche Bazaar. Tired but satisfied, we will spend the night at the accommodation we already know.
Duration of the hike: Approx. 7 hours - Ascent: 260 m - Descent: 680 m
Accommodation: Guest House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 18: NAMCHE BAZAAR (3440 M) – LUKLA (2850 M)
The last day of our trekking is tough and it demands a lot of effort on our behalf. We will walk for almost 18 km., but our physical condition is at its best due to the performance we have had the previous days. We will leave Namche around 8:30 am, and will descend to cross the Hillary Bridge once again, this time in the opposite direction. Many hanging bridges and towns will appear on our way. Most of them will be familiar to us, and will remind us of the first days of our trekking. We will feel euphoric and nostalgic at the same time. After this, we will have to face the last physical challenge, the climb to Lukla, the final 300 m altitude difference of all our circuit. In the evening, we will say good bye to our local team of porters and trekking guides in a solemn ceremony. Very excited for what we have experienced, toasting with a glass or two of Nepalese fire water, we will go to bed and spend the last night in the heart of the Himalayas.
