This is a huge cave, 200 m long. It takes its name from the Mylodon darwini, a giant ground sloth. This was a prehistoric animal and some of its remains were found inside the cave by a German adventurer, Hermann Eberhard in 1895. With this discovery, the area turned into a world sensation for the paleontological community and still today this site still attracts much attention. Arriving at the national park, we will install ourselves into our beautiful lodgings. They are located in a fantastic and peaceful area of the Serrano River. We will spend the following two nights here. During the afternoon we will go for a nice walk and explore the place. With a bit of luck we could observe the majestic flight of a condor.

DAY 5: RÍO SERRANO – GREY GLACIER – LAKE PEHOE - RÍO SERRANO
Today we will wake up early, we have a long and full day ahead of us. First of all we will drive towards Lake Grey. Here we will embark on our boat trip and navigate to the other side of the lake getting closer to the massive glacier. Although it has decreased its size significantly in the last decades, it has still got a total area of about 270 square kilometres, a height of 30 metres and a width of 6 kilometres in its front. Huge icebergs in all tones of blue float in the lake, an impressive natural spectacle. We will disembark near a refuge. No is the moment to get ready, tighten boots and load up our day packs, our trek starts. But we will take it easy, and for lunch we will stop at the perfect view point enjoying amazing vistas of the lake and massive glacier. If we are lucky we might be able to see ice calving off the glacier, massive chunks falling onto and into the water and become floating icebergs. Deeply impressed, we start walking once again. We will take approximately 4 hours walking along Lake Grey and then crossing over to the beautiful Pehoe Lake. The views from here of the Cuernos are just breath taking! By the shore of the lake we will enjoy these great vistas and relax before boarding a catamaran that will take us across the lake. From here we carry on to the area of Laguna Amarga, known for its abundant fauna. Here we will enjoy an easy walk stalking the groups of guanaco that can be found here. The guanaco is one of the four camelids native to South America. For this reason we are also in the hunting grounds if the puma. The so called “Andean lion” is very timid but on rare occasions it is possible to observe them in their natural habitat. We can also observe flamingos in the lake. The lake also inspires us due to its location, on windless days the Torres del Paine massif reflects in the lakes waters. After experiencing this impressive nature, we take the vehicle and drive to a typical working Patagonian sheep ranch. We will spend the night here, so will be able to experience the spirit and lives of the pioneers of this region. (Duration of the trek: approximately 2 hours).

DAY 7: BAQUEANO ZAMORA / HIKE TO THE BASE OF LAS TORRES
The last walk of our stay in the Torres del Paine National Park is complete in all aspects. The last walk during our stay in the Nacional Park is complete in all aspects. The famous granite towers that gave the name to the park are our objective for today. The word Paine, means blue, in the Aonikenk tongue, the language of the Tehuelches. The “Towers or Torres” are the symbol of this national park, they are three granite spires that are between 2600 and 2850 m high. From the beginning of our trek we start ascending up until we get to the base of this group of mountains. Soon we will feel the Patagonian wind blowing through our hair. The incomparable natural beauty of this area rewards us for all our efforts. After about 5-6 hours of ascending at a steady and slow pace we finally arrive at the viewpoint of the lake found at the base of the towers. Together we will experience moments and emotions that will be remembered forever. During the descent into the valley we must focus and concentrate, so as to arrive at our destination towards the end of the afternoon in one piece. Once we arrive back at our vehicle we will board it and drive back to our accommodation, while feeling the euphoria of all the impressions and emotions experienced during the day. (Duration of the trek: approximately 8 hours).

We will stop once or twice so as to take a few photographs of this unique “end of the world” landscape. After about 6 hours we will arrive at El Chaltén. With the passing of the years it has become famous with maintainers, trekkers and outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world. For the world’s best rock climbers, attempting to climb the granite towers turns into a huge challenge due to the extreme technical requirements and the climatic conditions. At the same time the amazing beauty of the mountains attracts nature lovers from all over the world. We will get the chance to get closer to them during fantastic treks. Today is the turn of Fitz Roy. The trek takes us to the base of this granite giant. We walk through enchanting forests that delight for their natural beauty and landscape. (Duration of the trek: approx. 7-8 hours).
Accommodation: Hotel 3-4*
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
DAY 10: EL CHALTÉN / HIKE CERRO TORRE
Cerro Torre is extremely difficult to climb due to its vertical rock walls and extreme climatic conditions. This makes it one of the most technically difficult ascents but at the same time one of the most beautiful in the world. There are many stories regarding the ascents and attempts. In 1952 the French mountaineers, Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone climbed Fitz Roy for the first time and judged that Cerro Torre rose up as an “impossible mountain”. Nevertheless, a few years later European climbers arrived, all trying to climb the most difficult mountain in the world. The first attempts to climb Cerro Torre date back to 1958, when the two Italian climbers, Walter Bonatti and Carlo Mauri managed to reach a considerable height on the west face but could not reach the summit. At the same time another Italian expedition made up of Bruno Detassis and Cesare Maestri de Trentino attempted to climb the east face but had to give up after a not so good attempt. One year later, Maestri returned to the mountain for another try. It is said that the first ascent was achieved on the 30 of January 1959 by Cesare Maestri and the Tyrolean Toni Egger from the north face. While descending, Egger suffered a fatal accident in an ice avalanche. The camera that contained the summit photo also disappeared along with his body, so Maestri was not able to prove that they actually reached the summit. From 1968 on, the mountain climbing community started having more doubts about the words of Maestri and their successful climb. Since then Cerro Torre is still known and considered by many to be the “impossible mountain”. The stories and myths surrounding this amazing granite tower will accompany us today on our trek. (Duration of the trek: approx. 7-8 hours).
Accommodation: Hotel 3-4*
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
DAY 11: EL CHALTÉN – EL CALAFATE
We leave El Chaltén. As we drive away our eyes take in the last views of this fantastic group of mountains that border the Southern Ice Field. Our destination today is El Calafate, the doorway to the famous Perito Moreno Glacier. Today it is a very important tourist destination and has a very well developed infrastructure. The bustling streets and excellent local cuisine invite us to enjoy our free time in the afternoon strolling through downtown.(Duration of the trip: approx. 3 hours).
Accommodation: Hotel 3-4*
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
DAY 12: EL CALAFATE / EXCURSION TO THE PERITO MORENO GLACIER
Our excursion today is a must for any trip to South America. The beauty of the Perito Moreno Glacier is truly indescribable. After breakfast we leave our hotel and drive west for approximately 70km across the Patagonian steppe until we arrive at “Bajo de las Sombras”. Here we will board a boat and navigate for one hour getting really close to the 70 meter high vertical glacial ice walls. After our boat trip we will continue traveling by vehicle. We arrive at the boardwalks that lead us to enjoy amazing panoramic views in front of the glacier. We will have enough time to enjoy and take in this incredible natural spectacle and try to dimension the size of this huge mass of ice. Every so often massive ice blocks carve off the 5 kilometer glacier wall and fall into and submerge themselves beneath the waters of Lake Argentina. This natural spectacle is like a symphony of colours. The Perito Moreno glacier is approximately 30 km long and has a surface area of more than 250 km². The glacier tongue is approximately 5 km wide and has a height of up to 75 meters. It is one of the few glaciers that is not receding. The reason for this is not yet clear considering that the other glaciers that are also fed by the Southern Patagonian ice field are receding and some of them are receding at an alarming rate. After an amazing day we return to El Calafate. This is our last night here. We will have time to enjoy the typical Patagonian cuisine in one of the excellent restaurants.
