We are very proud to be able to publish the good news concerning the result of a unique mountain ski expedition to Marmolejo Volcano. This fantastic mountain has the characteristic of being the southernmost 6,000 m (19,685 ft)-plus peak in the world.
SPONDYLUS organized with this expedition, one of the very few ski ascents of this mountain. The expedition team with 2 of our guides and a mountain ski expert from Japan, stayed together for 12 days in order to ascent by ski this impressive volcano. Due to extreme climatic conditions, the whole expedition group had to wait several days in the high camp at an altitude of more than 5,000 meters before trying the summit. After three nights in their tents, the expedition leader Rodrigo F. made the decision to go for the summit. On Sunday 05th of October in the afternoon, our operation base in Santiago de Chile received the message sent by Rodrigo with the satellite phone: "CUMBRE, DURISSIMO!" which means "SUMMIT, VERY HARD!" They did it! Despite the strong winds from the South, which are quite exceptional for Marmolejo, and the extreme coldness, the whole team reached the summit and, after 12 hours in total, they went back again to their tents in the high camp. The dreamlike downhill by ski on the following day was the hardly-earned reward for the extraordinary effort during the whole expedition.
SPONDYLUS would like to thank the guides Rodrigo F. and Maximiliano V. for their excellent job and our guest Noboru K. from Japan for trusting us. See you soon again!
