THE FLOWERING DESERT
THE MIRACLE OF ATACAMA - BEGINNING OF THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE DAV (GERMAN ANDEAN CLUB) & SPONDYLUS

The Miracle of AtacamaWe chose the Atacama Desert as the destiny for our first trip where, during the months of September & October, the phenomenon of the Flowering Desert is expected.

The phenomenon of the Flowering Desert is rarely seen, because it depends to a large degree on the amount of rain fallen during the winter months. A good rainfall is required for the seeds that have been dormant for a long period in the dry desert, to come back to life and bloom for a short time in the spring. The landscape changes completely, transforming the arid desert into a multicolor show. It is only possible to enjoy this "miracle" of the desert for a very short period of time, from the end of August to the beginning of November. In Copiapo, the valleys and gorges transform into real gardens where the main characters are fascinating flowers & animals. There are more than 200 types of flowers, and most of them are endemic to our country, decorating the arid landscape of the Atacama. Different types of birds, insects and other animals can also be seen, like the lizard, and the Atacama Tucotuco (a small rodent).

The Flowering Desert has not been seen at its maximum expression since 2008. Last year, it was seen in a very small scale in the Region of Atacama. In 2011, the phenomenon is expected to repeat itself in an extraordinary event due to the very unusual and abundant rain that fell last winter season. The figures show, there were 130 mm of rain in the area of La Serena, and it also rained in Copiapo, Caldera, Taltal, Antofagasta y Arica.

The GERMAN ANDEAN CLUB & SPONDYLUS kindly invite you to participate in a short trip and a nice experience to the area of Caldera, where this phenomenon is expected to be the most spectacular in the last decades. Let’s explore together the paths of the desert and form part of the very few people that had been lucky enough to observe this wonder of nature, found in a few places in the world.
