It gets a little bit more expensive for our sponsors now: We successfully completed the fitness-check at Lascar Volcano, 5605m.
We drove from San Pedro de Atacama to Laguna Legia, a little lake full with Flamingos. The night at this place at about 4400m was cold, a first check for our ability to deal with low temperatures. After an earlier than usual breakfast we started to climb Lascar. It went quite well, no issues to report.
After 6 hours we were back at the 4WD. Right away we started our trip to the most important destination: Ojos de Salado. First, we drove to the Salar de Atacama were we spent the night in a beautiful oasis. The following day we continued our trip through Salar de Atacama and by the Lithium-mines of SQM, where the Rockwood-company Chemetall also gets their Lithium from. Obviously this operation is doubling its activity each year since about five years. In the meantime it looks like it covers most of the southern part of the Atacama Saltlake.
November 30th we will finally arrive at the area of Ojos de Salado and start with our preparations for climbing this mountain. We will first ascend the San Francisco (6018m) as a final fitness check and if weather permits, the Ojos three days later. Keep fingers crossed ...
