The High Plateau in the 3rd region of Chile, the Atacama Region, has the highest concentration of mountains with an altitude over 6500 meters in the Andes. For this it is considered as "The Roof of the Americas".
SPONDYLUS together with MWGuiding from Bern/Switzerland undertook an expedition into this paradise for high altitude mountaineers and nature lovers. Without a doubt it is a unique and extremely fascinating region!
The two mountain guides Hans-Martin Schmitt (SPONDYLUS) and Mischu Wirth (MWGuiding) together with one male and two female mountaineers from Switzerland spent more than 3 weeks together in order to acclimatize and finally climb the highest active volcano of the world, the Ojos del Salado with its 6893 meters.
To guarantee a good acclimatization, several beautiful treks in the San Pedro de Atacama region were undertook. After the treks a number of other mountains were ascended as a preparation for the extremely high altitude of the Ojos del Salado, such as Cerro Soquete (5408m), Lascar Volcano (5602m) and Cerro Vicuñas (6067m).
SPONDYLUS feels very proud that together with its Swiss partner MWGuiding this fascinating expedition could be realized. All the members went back home save and sound and richer due to this unforgettable experience.
